Is it illegal to put leaflets on car windscreens?

In the UK there is no law against placing leaflets on parked vehicles as long as you don't:

• damage the vehicle
• cause an obstruction to the highway
• trespass on private property

However, I wouldn't recommend the traditional method of placing your leaflet under a car's wiper blades for a number of reasons:

If you accidentally damage a car's wiper blades, you'll be liable for the cost of repair. I've also learnt to my cost that drivers can get quite irate (to put it mildly!) if they don't see your leaflet when they first return to their car. Once they've gone to the effort of pulling over to retrieve an annoying piece of paper that's been fluttering before their eyes, they're hardly going to be in the best frame of mind to read and act upon your sales message.

In my experience, a much more successful approach is to print small (A6 or A5) leaflets onto thick paper (250-300gsm). It's easy to slip a corner of these cards between the window and the rubber seal of the driver's door. No danger of your potential customer missing that!

It's a tactic I've used to promote my leaflet printing services for several years. I don't go out on dedicated leafleting sessions - I wish I had the time. Instead, I put a leaflet on each car I pass on my way through the supermarket car park or as I walk down the street on my way to a meeting. It hardly takes any time at all and the results speak for themselves. Only last month I got an order worth over £500 from someone who 'stole' one of my leaflets off someone's car in my local Tesco car park!
